What is PETG? The material behind our vases

Mare 3D-printed vase in dark teal on a wooden table

Short answer: PETG (polyethylene terephthalate glycol) is a tough, lightweight plastic from the same family as the PET used for drinks bottles. The added glycol makes it less brittle and easier to 3D-print. Every AnyVases vase is printed in Malta from 100% recycled PETG.

Why we print in PETG

  • It holds water. PETG absorbs very little moisture and its layers fuse well, so a well-printed PETG vase can take fresh flowers.
  • It is tough. It flexes a little before it breaks, so it copes with everyday knocks better than glass or ceramic.
  • It is light. Easy to move, and lighter to ship.
  • The colour runs through it. There is no paint or glaze to chip.

PETG, PLA and ceramic compared

PETG PLA Ceramic
Weight Light Light Heavy
If dropped Can crack on a hard drop, but rarely shatters More brittle Can chip or shatter
Holds water Yes, when printed for it Yes, when printed for it Yes, when glazed
Heat Softens at around 80°C Softens at around 55–60°C Not affected by household heat
Dishwasher No No Usually yes

We ask you to keep our vases below 60°C. That leaves a safe margin below the point where PETG starts to soften.

What "100% recycled PETG" means

The filament we print with is made entirely from recycled PETG rather than new plastic. The colour and finish are the same as standard PETG. Each vase is then printed to shape in our studio in Malta. Read how we print in Malta for the full process.

Is PETG safe at home?

For decorative use, yes. Our vases are for flowers and display only. They are not sold as food-safe and are not toys, so keep small vases away from young children.

Quick answers

Is PETG the same as PET?

They are close relatives. PETG adds glycol, which makes it less brittle and better suited to 3D printing.

Can PETG hold water?

Yes. A PETG vase printed with fused layers and a solid base holds water. See Are 3D-printed vases waterproof?

How do I clean a PETG vase?

Rinse it with lukewarm water and dust the ribs with a soft, dry brush. No dishwasher and no solvents. More in our care guide.
